Within the San Francisco Bay area, there are multiple Gateway Sober Living Environment homes that can help people continue on the road to recovery. While people who live in these environments are required to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing sobriety, the help they get in a sober living community like this may mean the difference between wishing for change and actually seeing those changes come to fruition.

Each Gateway Sober Living Environment home is run by a house parent and an assistant house parent. They work hard to ensure that the rules and standards of the home are maintained, so each resident has the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe environment. As a result, each resident is expected to:

  • Remain sober from all mind-altering substances
  • Attend 12-step meetings, and obtain a sponsor in the program
  • Attend house meetings
  • Adhere to curfew rules
  • Pay fees on time

Residents are also expected to find a job within two weeks of moving into the facility, and they’re expected to work for at least 20 hours per week. Many people with addictions believe they’ll never be hired, but in reality, there are several companies that are willing to work with those new to recovery. In fact, in an article in the journal Addiction, researchers outline a program in which a data-entry company provided jobs to people new to recovery, and tested their urine for compliance. Rewards were tied to sobriety, while relapses had punitive consequences. Programs like this are associated with robust recovery, but even getting a regular job can help people to develop a routine and rhythm for the day, so they can learn how to fill the time with fruitful activities, rather than punishing substance abuse.
